Arjun Appadurai

7.30 PM

Appadurai is considered one of the world's leading experts in post-colonial studies. His work embraces various aspects of cultural studies, exploring the cultural reconfigurations typical of modernity and globalization, the impact of mass communication in developing countries and the advent of new media, and the factors shaping modernity in the broadest sense, as a permanent condition of the individual in continual migration.

“As we refine the ways in which specific conceptions of aspiration, anticipation and imagination become configured so as to produce the future as a specific cultural form or horizon – Appadurai writes  – we will be better able to place within this scheme more particular ideas about prophecy, well-being, emergency, crisis and regulation”. On July 27th his lecture is about the way a social improvement can lead a cultural transformation (and viceversa): “For the purpose of the current argument about the future, it is important to see  that the capacity to aspire is a cultural capacity, in the sense that it takes its force within local systems of value, meaning, communication and dissent.”

On the occasion of the XXI Triennale di Milano, Meet the Media Guru presents, in co-production with the Triennale, Future Ways of Living, a cycle of events dedicated to directions in global innovation.

From 31 May to 27 July we will be bringing together a variety of ideas on the themes of design, future cities and sustainability. A voyage around the world offering unexpected points of view and opening up new perspectives that prompt us to say: “Oh, so there’s something else”.

The protagonists of the six events are John Thackara, Mugendi K. M’Rithaa, Jonathan Woetzel, Andrea Brandi and Kenya Hara, Luigi Ferrara and Arjun Appadurai, international public intellectuals who are accustomed to thinking about the world as a global village where new design scenarios are possible beyond the confines of national viewpoints.
