The exhibition, set up in the spaces of Torre Velasca, presents the Italian première of In Search of the Perfect Double (2017) by the American Kaari Upson.

The video is the continuation of the artist’s research into the relationship between the subject and the domestic environment, consumerism and mass production, staging an unusual survey of a number of serial residential units in Las Vegas, so-called “tract houses”.
With checkered shirt, jeans and a blonde wig, Upson performs a sequence of surreal actions, such as painstakingly comparing the details of the various uninhabited houses, complaining about the differences, repeatedly trying to fit into architectural interstices, dragging a puppet that looks like her from one room to another, and imagining the failure of a hypothetical child forced to live in an all-too-square bedroom. The grotesque inspection carried out by the artist’s alter ego reveals the paradoxical and unsettling nature of the domestic sphere, in which memory and obsession, body and space, interior and exterior are blurred together. In the impossible quest for a ‘perfect double’, through buildings designed to be identical, Kaari Upson’s work reflects on the dialectic between idealism and desire, consumerism and standardization: key factors in the social existence of individuals.
