The exhibit shows how some of the great masters of photography – such as Helmut Newton – took their inspiration from the underground production of anonymous erotic photography. Ranging from French photographic postcards to American pin-ups and images of domestic intimacy, the photo trouvées show how eroticism has always been one of the main pillars of photography.

The exhibit shows 200 photo trouvées that focus on eroticism and date from 1880 to the 1960s. All these anonymous pictures were shot in Europe and in the US. The exhibit is divided in 20 sections, each of them dealing with a different theme of erotic photography – from private snapshots to the images produced for photography academies. Among these, visitors will find a celebration of Courbet’s masterpiece. These pictures are protected by a curtain.
The progression of the exhibit shows how the developments of the photographic technique – from the introduction of faster film rolls to smaller cameras – have turned erotic photography into a game for couples, a new opportunity for intimacy. The house, from the living room to the bedroom or the garden, becomes the privileged set of this new mise en scene. Until, in the 60s, a new guest makes its appearance in that same living room: the TV. Demonstrating a great spirit of adaptation, or indifference, the photographers – husbands, partners, lovers, friends – take pictures of their partners next to the TV stand. It marks a watershed in the consumption of erotic photography. In a moment, the internet will arrive.
Closing the exhibit is a selection of photographs, both American and French, that anticipate the style and themes of that kind of eroticism that Helmut Newton particularly appreciated – a confirmation of the influence that anonymous erotic photography has had on some of the great photographers of our time.
