A series of exhibitions devoted to materials and handicrafts

La Triennale di Milano presents Materialmente, a series of five small exhibitions, from October 2017 to March 2018, with the work of young artists/sculptors who reinterpret traditional materials from a contemporary angle.

Animali incartati (Wrapped Animals) is the second in the series, with a display of Alice Zanin’s floating sculptures in papier-mâché.

Alice Zanin has created a surreal and surrealist zoo, full of critters and beasts that are as ethereal as the paper they are made of, and as strong as the iron frames within them. Hollowed-out animals of absolute lightness, floating between playful imagination and concrete matter, as though reminding us of a lost childhood.

Alice Zanin is a young exponent of a nouvelle vague that adopts paper as its material of choice, with Sabrina Mezzaqui has its best-known name at the international level. For many years she has worked to perfect an ancient technique in the light of the latest aesthetic boundaries of the contemporary world. Her style has become clearly recognisable, both in her large-format sculptures and in her smallest ones. It allows her to mediate between a desire for perfection and proportion, and a personal interpretation of the animal world as an almost dreamlike counterpart to our own: at once ornament and allusion, stimulus and representation.
