A series of exhibitions devoted to materials and handicrafts

La Triennale di Milano presents Materialmente, a series of five small exhibitions, from October 2017 to March 2018, with the work of young artists/sculptors who reinterpret traditional materials from a contemporary angle.

There is an endless conflict between organic and inorganic matter, between the miraculous exuberance of cells and the stolid fixity of lifeless compost, between form in the making and form solidified, between the sphere and the cube, chaos and the cosmos, and between the Apollonian and the Dionysian. The work of Beatrice Gallori plays in the gaps between these opposites, in other words just where it seems that being attacks non-being or that non-being triumphs, at last, over being. Gallori’s work, which is of sophisticated brilliance, makes her one of the most interesting artists of her generation: midway between 1980s pop culture (in the use of colourful, glossy materials), 1960s spatialism (in the extroversions that go beyond two-dimensionality), and the most recent conceptual art, with its links to the discoveries of science and biology. In this series of objects, all strictly red, the tension between life and death acquires a mirror-like perspective, filled with cross references and ideas, in which the aesthetic dimension sublimates the power of a study of materials that has been going on for years.
