#5 Stitching up the World

A series of exhibitions devoted to materials and handicrafts

La Triennale di Milano presents Materialmente, a series of five small exhibitions, from October 2017 to March 2018, showing the work of young artists/sculptors who reinterpret traditional materials from a contemporary angle.

Stitching up the World, which presents the work of the artist Florencia Martinez, is the fifth event in the series.

Florencia Martinez has always chosen fabrics to tell her story. Jute, felt, high-fashion fabrics and remnants of wedding dresses, torn, padded, redesigned and then sewn into clusters and seeds or into long swollen snakes, curled up as if they were ready to strike. Her works convey her delight in handling the fabric and making it her own, and then transforming it in order to recreate the world. The process is slow, age-old and feminine, and yet assertive and almost violent in the long stitches inflicted by the curved, claw-like needle in conspicuous sutures of tough thread. The work is at once meditative and cathartic, giving voice to a thirst for love, and to affections, maternity, struggles, defeats, and conquests in the typical joyful colour of her land, Argentina. It appears in figures of warriors, angels, Venuses, and Madonnas, in embraces and little houses – refuges for lost wayfarers balancing on the tops of inaccessible mountains.
