The exhibition will provide an overview of reconstruction work from different times and places and a reflection on the future prospects of an action that will increasingly involve governments and architects.

The reconstruction of cities and territories used to be only occasional, but epoch-making events, though rare, have made it a constant practice, due to the intensification of wars, earthquakes and other types of catastrophe around the world. It is also due to the inability of affected populations to cope on their own in the aftermath. However, the accumulation of vast experience has not always led to the formation of a real heritage that can be used as a model. The most recent destructive events in Italy have shown an increase in emergency-based responses and the consequent rejection of past experiences. Some of the latter have been of the highest level, putting Italy at the forefront of reconstruction, with a close eye on the different features of places and on their individual characteristics. The exhibition will provide an overview of reconstruction work from different times and places and a reflection on the future prospects of work that, from Europe to the Middle East and the Americas, will increasingly involve governments and architects.

A selection of the most significant cases in Italy since the war and a series of experiences from around the world are given as possible models in the display, which is put on in a single room. They are illustrated by historical documents, news photos, works by great photographers, and excerpts from films and documentaries, as well as architectural designs and urban plans. Comparisons between individual Italian and foreign cases, shown as specific experiences, will make it possible to draw interpretations from many sides and reflect on the great issues that all have in common. This is an essential means for approaching the increasingly common theme of reconstruction in an open and conscious manner. The exhibition ends with considerations about the most recent cases, still fixed in the moment of the emergency as in a state of suspended animation, opening up new questions about the role of architects and architecture in reconstruction.
