Sylphidarium, a new production by CollettivO CineticO, decomposes classical ballet codes in an energetic performance, full of humour and infectious vitality.

Sylphidarium, a new production by CollettivO CineticO, decomposes classical ballet codes in an energetic performance, full of humour and infectious vitality. Pointe shoes and tutus are replaced by an extravagant succession of dancers in balaclavas, silver leggings with legwarmers and Scottish kilts.
The work evokes the founding piece of Romantic ballet, Maria Taglioni’s La Sylphide from 1832 which evolved in Les Sylphides, its abstract remake of 1909, to then move towards entomology with the Silphidae, the beetles used by scientists in post-mortem investigations to establish the time of death.
Choreographer and dancer Francesca Pennini, founder and director of the company, reinvents, hybridises, transforms. The result is an autopsy of classical ballet, which blends with gymnastics, acrobatics, bodybuilding, with an aerobic ending styled after Jane Fonda, which revamps the iridescent effect of the tutus.
A stunning piece, beautifully matched by Francesco Antonioni’s dynamic music, in dialogue with Chopin and performed live, and by Fabio Sajiz’s raw lighting. The work rethinks tradition and draws a changing body, between aseptic an ascetic, beyond the contemporary.

CollettivO CineticO was born in 2007 and is directed by choreographer Francesca Pennini in collaboration with more than fifty artist coming from various disciplines. The research of the collective focuses on the nature of the performative event, discussing its mechanisms and using formats which combine choreography, theatre and the visual arts. The company is in residence at Teatro Comunale of Ferrara and has produced numerous creations receiving various awards among which the Jurislav Korenić Award for Best Young Theatre Director, the Premio Rete Critica 2014 for best artist, the Premio Danza&Danza 2015 for best choreographer and interpreter, as well as nominations for Premio Ubu for Best performer under 35, Premio Hystrio Iceberg 2016, Premio Mess at BE Festival in Birmingham 2016, Premio Nazionale dei Critici di Teatro for Teatro Danza 2016. Their most recent works include Sylphidarium (2016), 10 miniballetti (2015), Amleto (2014), <age> (2012).

A project by Triennale Teatro dell’Arte and Teatro Franco Parenti.
