Fernando Rubio’s work builds unusual and deep connections between performers and spectators. The projects created by the Argentine dramaturg, actor and visual artist construct spaces and stories which lead us to look at ourselves through renewed eyes; they employ everyday elements and objects but place them in a new context, which is different from the familiar one.
In Todo lo que está a mi lado, a performance which has toured internationally, the space is occupied by beds, each shared by an actress and a spectator. The piece was inspired by a dream which has brought back to the artist’s memory a lost story from his childhood. This story had been suspended in Rubio’s mind and soul for 25 years and has now re-emerged. Todo lo que está a mi lado is an intimate reflection on the limits and possibilities – aesthetic, conceptual, urban – of personal experience. These are available to our senses in the unforgettable moment in which we meet a stranger. The encounter happens in a place which is at the same time imaginary and real: a bed, an actress, a spectator and the world around them.
