After their first ever performance in Milan for Uovo performing arts festival ten years ago, Mammalian Diving Reflex is back with a project that brings together teenagers and adults in an unpredictable night-time performance. All the works produced by the Canadian company led by Darren O’Donnell are socially dynamic and articulate their research through active participation, which develops the audience’s critical perspective.
Nightwalks with Teenagers invites a group of teenagers to take charge of an urban neighbourhood, organising a night-time walk guiding spectators through the city. With this work, Mammalian Diving Reflex creates the conditions for a transformative encounter between youngsters and adults and between people from different geographical, cultural, socio-economic and racial backgrounds, who don’t usually have the opportunity to spend time together. The performance is the result of collaboration between the company’s artists and a group of teenagers, developed over two weeks through a series of workshops.
Mammalian Diving Reflex was founded in Toronto in 1993 and is known for creating performances that are intellectually stimulating. It was born under the artistic direction of author and director Darren O’Donnell and since then has been working on the private and social dimension of language, thought and information. The company has produced various works in Canada, Japan, Australia, Singapore, India, the United States, Ireland, England and many other European countries. Their projects include Diplomatic Immunities, pppeeeaaaccceee, The Children’s Choice Awards, Who Shot Jacques Lacan?, Dare Night, Slow Dance with Teacher, Nightwalks with Teenagers. Haircuts by Children, which was presented in Milan in 2009 by Uovo performing arts festival and involved children from all over the world in a workshop and play of cutting hair in a real hair salon. The artistic practice of the company identifies a performative dimension in everyday gestures and explores both aesthetics and society creating unusual alliances between the art world and young people. The research of Mammalian Diving Reflex takes the form of performance, of collective experiences, of theoretical texts and happenings.
