“This record is an evocation of Michèle Lamy sitting in a cave, surrounded by wild beasts ready to devour her.” Nico Vascellari
An exclusive event opens the FOG festival: the Italian premiere of the eccentric sound project Lavascar, following the world premiere at the Centre Pompidou last December. Borne out of the collaboration between Michèle Lamy, one of fashion’s most iconic figure, Nico Vascellari, visual artist and performer, and Scarlett Rouge, artist and Lamy’s daughter, the project was named Lavascar after the names of its members.
In 2017 Lavascar worked with the producer Rocco Rampino to record their debut album, A Dream Deferred, in the Red Bull Music Studios in Paris – inspired by Montage of a Dream Deferred a poem by Langston Hughes, favorite poet of Michèle Lamy.
With an unusual and idiosyncratic use of voices and rhythms, the group offers an acoustic journey through a mystical, nearly prehistoric landscape.
Michèle Lamy, entrepreneur, creative director and producer, is one of the most charismatic personalities of both the fashion system and art world. Born in Jura, France, she founded Les Deux Cafés restaurant in 1996, legendary spot of the alternative scene of Los Angeles, a meeting place of Madonna, Tom Ford, Grace Jones and others. Here she created the Les Deux Love Orchestra which welcomed every week artists such as Larry Klain, who later won four Grammys, and Joni Mitchell, and where Lamy performed adaptations of Langston Hughes’ poems to her own music. She is both business partner and wife of Rick Owens. Lamy founded Lamyland in 2014, a platform to present her independent ‘art’ projects, including Bargel (Frieze London 2014), Bargenale/Bargenale II (Venice Biennale 2015/2017) and most recently Lamyland x Selfridges, where she was invited to curate The Corner Shop at Selfridges and take up a 3-month residency incorporating art, commerce and a fully functioning boxing gym (January – March 2018).
Nico Vascellari is one of the most radical artists of his generation. His work ranges from visual arts and performance to sound research. He has exhibited his work in some of the most important centers and institutions of contemporary art such as Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2017), the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici (2016), Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester (2016), The Estorick Collection in London (2016), the Centre International d’art in Vassivière (2010), the Museion of Bolzano (2010), la Maison Rouge in Paris (2012), La Monnaie in Paris (2012), the 52nd Biennale of Venice (2007), the International Festival of Manchester (2009), Manifesta 7 at Rovereto (2008). He has received numerous awards among which the Rome Prize (2008), the Premio della Giovane Arte Italiana (2007), Premio New York (2006), Premio Internazionale della Performance (2005). He created the music group Ninos Du Brasil.
Scarlett Rouge, artist , actor, and Michèle Lamy’s daughter, started her career as a performer at the age of four with the band The Visiting Kids. Between 1985 and 1987 she interpreted various characters in the controversial productions of her father, Richard Newton, famous experimental playwright. In 2002 she graduated from the California Institute of the Arts. Her most recent works , that range from painting to performance and from sculpture to cinema, include: Composition Poetique Quotidienne at Youn Galerie in Montreal (2016), The Desert of Blythe, installation created with Anatol LaFayette for Fresh Winds Biennale of Gardur, in Iceland (2016), Blithe Spirit at Ghost Space gallery in Torino (2013), Recits des Trois Perverses Femme Seulement at Jancar Gallery in Los Angeles (2012), Art Jungle in the gardens of the Venaria Reale (2012), In the Womb at Antebellum Gallery in Hollywood (2010).
