Silvia Costa, one of Italy’s most fascinating directors and performers, presents the world premiere of a sound installation inspired by Bildbeschreibung by the German dramaturg Heiner Müller. In recent years, the artist has engaged with significant international theatre and opera projects and has developed her research through installation-performances. With this new work, Silvia Costa focuses on sound and voice. The minutely detailed description of an immaterial picture, which no one can see and which perhaps doesn’t exist, sparks a journey towards an image from memory, or maybe a recurring nightmare. It is the Voice that creates this image through a precise description, directing the gaze and the attention towards a detail, a colour, a shape, and inviting us to reflect on the causes and effects of what we begin to see. The voice becomes eye, the ears are turned into sight organs. In the end, what is left is the perception of a memory, the feeling that we may have seen something.
Silvia Costa (Treviso, 1984) studied visual and performing arts at the IUAV University of Venice. Soon after she got involved in theatre, creating connections with other artistic fields while developing a global and profound vision. With musician and composer Lorenzo Tomio, they have been conducting, for the past 10 years, an artistic research focused on experimentation as well as on the investigation of the human nature. She has conceived and produced performances (La quiescenza del seme, A sangue freddo), theatrical plays (Stato di Grazia, Quello che di più grande l’uomo ha realizzato sulla terra), installations and videos (Musica da Camera, Tabula, Emotional Intelligence). She acts and directs, she is regularly invited to the most national and international festivals.
In 2012 she started focusing as well on creating projects and performances for children, the most recent being Poil de Carote which made its successful debut in France in 2016. Since 2006 she has been taking part as an actress in the company Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio as well as an artistic collaborator to the theatrical productions and works of director Romeo Castellucci.
Silvia Costa is Triennale Teatro dell’Arte’s associated artist.
