Three of the world’s most prestigious music conservatories have opened their doors for the first time to microphones and recording devices: the Shanghai Conservatory, the State Conservatory Rimsky-Korsakov in Saint Petersburg and the Music Conservatory San Pietro a Majella in Naples. The Soundwalk Collective, artist-musicians based between New York and Berlin, whose prestigious collaborations include Jean-Luc Godard, Nan Goldin and Patti Smith, have accessed the corridors and teaching rooms of these three institutions, and recorded hundreds of hours of students’ practice, which is carried out with the shared awareness that the desired aim of all this hard work is excellence and virtuosity. The audio-visual performance Before Music There Is Blood is a reflection on music, on composition and, ultimately, on harmony. The notes merge together through walls, windows, corridors and courtyards, creating ever-changing and unexpected melodies, true anarchic compositions in which civilizations, compositions and centuries share the same acoustic territory. This world is evoked also by the film made by Eponine Momenceau, artist and filmmaker, to accompany the live performance of the work.
Based between New York and Berlin, Soundwalk Collective is an art and music group founded in 2009 with the aim of producing concept albums, sound installations and live performances. Its members Stephan Crasneanski, Simone Merli and Kamran Sadeghi often work in collaboration with other artists, musicians and writers, including, in recent projects, Jean-Luc Godard, Nan Goldin and Patti Smith. In their compositions, they combine anthropology, ethnography, non-linear narrative, psychogeography, the observation of nature and explorations of recording and synthesis processes. Their works always emerge from specific places and require long residences and periods of fieldwork. Over the years, they have presented their compositions in venues such as Opéra de Lyon, CTM Festival (Berlin), KW Institute of Contemporary Art (Berlin), Strichka Festival (Kiev), Arma 17 (Moscow), Barbican Centre (London), Berghain (Berlin), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Florence Gould Hall (New York), Mobile Art by Zaha Hadid (Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York), MUDAM (Luxemburg), MuCEM (Marseille), Museo Madre (Naples), National Museum of Singapore, New Museum (New York), TAP (Poitiers) and Villa de Noailles – Centre d’Art et de Culture Contemporain (Hyères). They had solo shows at the Rubin Museum of Art (New York), District Six Museum (Cape Town), “Capo d’Arte” in Gagliano del Capo (Lecce, Italy) and in Times Square in New York City, where in April 2016 they set up Jungle-ized, a large participative audio-visual installation. Their recent album Killer Road, an homage to the singer and musician Nico realised in collaboration with Patti Smith, was performed live in Abu Dhabi, Berlin, London and New York.
