Lectio magistralis by François Jullien

Fondazione Adolfo Pini, in collaboration with Triennale Milano, offers a lectio magistralis by the French philosopher François Jullien. "I would not defend a cultural identity (French, Italian, European), that is impossible to identify, but I would rather talk about cultural resources" Jullien writes in his book L’identità culturale non esiste (Einaudi, 2018). For Jullien, to defend does not mean to protect but to exploit. If we understand that these resources are born in a language as well as in a tradition, in a certain environment and in a landscape, we also understand that they are available to everyone and do not belong to anyone in particular. Resources are not exclusive as “values” are; they must be distributed, each of us is responsible for this. The lecture addresses the theme of Europe, asking to take responsibility in distributing and spreading those resources that can make us Europeans without keeping us attached to those nationalisms that protect us from the other.
