Frequencies of gesture

Andrea Giomi, Martina Zena
November 13 2020, 8.00pm
Premiere
FOG offers space to young choreographers with these works created specifically for the festival in collaboration with Ariella Vidach - AiEP. Frequencies of gesture is an interactive performance-installation by Andrea Giomi and Martina Zena which investigates the relationship between gestures, sounds and signs, and the way in which movement can be rematerialized in the form of sound and visual traces. By making different techniques interact – in this case live drawing and chalcography, motion analysis and interactive sonification, data visualization and artificial intelligence – this work questions the way in which the knowledge which is located in the gesture can be externalized through the device and re-incorporated in a new material form.

Andrea Giomi is a sound artist, performer and researcher. Since 2018 he has been a postdoctoral research fellow at the Performance Laboratory of the Université Grenoble-Alpes, where he is researching the sonification of movement. He is one of the founders of the theatre collective Kokoschka Revival. His artistic and performance work focuses on the relationships between body, sound and technology, especially in the context of improvisation and the underground electronic music scene. He has presented his works in several international venues and festivals.
Martina Zena is a visual artist who trained at Bologna’s Accademia di Belle Arti. After graduating in Painting and completing a Master’s in Art Graphics, she was a resident artist at Fabrica, the research and communication centre of the Benetton group (Treviso).
